Strange Bedfellows

11 Feb 2008 In: Politics & Religion, Uncategorized

One of my original posts on this blog was about my desire to make a political cartoon called “Strange Bedfellows” that would star an elephant married to a donkey.

Today, I have made the first step in making that a reality:

This is just a preliminary design for the characters, but it’s a step in the right direction.

I actually like the idea so much I might drop the daily Duck Goes Moo! cartoon and just work on this comic. There always will be plenty of fodder for jokes and story lines with all the politics that go on.

I’ll have to make a couple of strips and see if it seems to work.

Edwards Dropping out of Race

30 Jan 2008 In: Politics & Religion

Well, it looks like once again Edwards will not be our next president.

I’m a bit crestfallen about this, as Edwards was my choice for the presidency in the last election and now this time he’s dropped out even before Super Tuesday. I think he could of pulled ahead by then, but in the end he may just have served as a spoiler for Obama or Hillary.

Well, if Edwards isn’t going to be president I think he should not think about being vice-president and instead seek out becoming the next United States Attorney General.

Obama Takes Iowa – Victory Speech

3 Jan 2008 In: Politics & Religion

Really, it’s a statistical dead-heat, and there are a lot of other states out there to win and lots of opportunities for a Dean-like gaffe.

On the GOP side, Huckabee won but others like Guliani, who did not campaign in Iowa, may outshine him in other states.

Also, it is rumored Joseph Biden will be dropping out of the race soon.

– actually, scratch that. Dodd and Biden have both officially dropped out:

The Onion Spoofs Edwards

31 Dec 2007 In: Politics & Religion

Even though I am backing Edwards for the Democratic candidacy for president, I found this article rather funny and actually a bit poignant.

“Many bad things are not just bad—they’re terrible,” said a beaming Edwards, whose “Only the Good Things” proposal builds upon previous efforts to end poverty, outlaw startlingly loud noises, and offer tax breaks to those who smile frequently. “Other candidates have plans that would reduce some of the bad things, but I want all of them gone completely.”

White House Ceremony Catches Fire

Okay, not sure what sort of ceremony Dick Cheney was doing in his Ceremonial Office, but it just caught on fire:

Writer’s Guild Strike Backed By Politicals

18 Dec 2007 In: Politics & Religion

Ooh ooh! I just discovered a new conspiracy!

No, not really, but I just had a cool idea for one.

Probably the best political coverage comes from the Daily Show and other late night comedy shows. This is because a lot of their humor comes from poking holes in poorly made arguments made by politicians, pointing out inconsistencies in the things they say and support, and even exposing outright lies.

The writer’s strike has put an end to this critical and informative slant on American politics… could it be that was the plan? That secretly some organization fanned the flames of distrust between the writers and the media?

Now the first primaries will be untainted by satire and humorous insight.

Well, there probably isn’t a conspiracy, but it does make me wonder if the writer’s strike has indeed changed who is going to be our next president.

Imagine if there had been a writer’s strike when Dean made his infamous scream. Perhaps he would be president right now, or at least been the Democratic candidate.

Just something to think about.

Paul Kucinich 08?

29 Nov 2007 In: Politics & Religion

Is there a possibility of a split ticket candidacy? Dennis Kucinich has been quoted as saying that he would be willing to run with Ron Paul, who is currently running for president as a Republican, as his running mate:

http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics/2007/11/the-buzz-about.html

It may all be gossip, but the idea actually appeals to me, especially if they both ran as independents.

It reminds me of a rumor from the last election. There was a notion going around that John Kerry was going to pick John McCain as his running mate, though nothing could be confirmed as far as I know.

Ron Paul

29 Nov 2007 In: Politics & Religion

Wow, almost enough to make me think about voting Republican next year. I think Ron Paul makes the most amount of sense out of all the Republican candidates. Still, I’m hoping that Edwards or Biden get the Democratic nomination so I can vote for one of them. Actually, if Kucinich won the democratic nomination I’d vote for him, but I doubt he’ll make it that far.

I really wish Ron Paul was running as an independent, though I do not want Roe Vs. Wade revoked.

YouTube Republican Debate

29 Nov 2007 In: Politics & Religion

I was going to watch this but forgot it was on. Fortunately its all available on YouTube.

I thought this was the most interesting of the bits I viewed of it. It kind of reminds me of when Edwards was hit by a similar gay issue question where the person was in the audience.

I’m not a Republican, and quite liberal actually, so it’s a little hard for me to tell who came out good in this whole debate. I guess being booed repeatedly is bad, so that might be a good gauge.

Huh…. the YouTubbery is not showing up. Here is a link:

I just took the ABC Match-o-Matic test to see what presidential candidates best match my views and here is what I got back:

1.) Joe Biden
2.) Mike Gravel
3.) Dennis Kucinich

I admit, I really have liked almost everything Biden has said, and I clapped the loudest for some of Gravel’s comments during the debates, and I really like Kucinich as a person.

Still… I admit I had forgotten about these candidates and had focused mostly on the top three.

Is Colbert Really Running?

17 Oct 2007 In: Politics & Religion

Yesterday Stephen Colbert announced that he was running for president on his late night talk show, “The Colbert Report”… but he is going to run for president only in South Carolina, his home state.

Is this anything more than a fun stunt? How far can a joke candidacy like this go?

Another issue is, will he stay in character the whole time or run as his actual self? He has chosen his vice-president already: “Colbert”, pronounced “coal-bert” instead of his usual “coal-bear”. This could mean that he will be in character when speaking as a presidential candidate and out of character when speaking as the vice-president.

more here

Even more so, how long will Colbert keep up this faux-neo-con act? He is almost never out of character in public, even when giving interviews on other shows or speaking at colleges (like my old haunt, Knox College). Will he give up the act when it gets old?

Or has he perhaps been so consumed by the character that he himself is not sure who he is anymore? In the more recent of his shows it seems people are starting to fall for the act and cheer for conservative points and boo progressive ones, like they somehow have lost the irony and are just going along with whatever comes out of Colbert’s mouth?

Here is a brief segment where is actually appears out of character:
