Yelle – Je Veux Te Voir

3 Apr 2008 In: Music & Concerts

I’ve got this stupid French Pop song stuck in my head. It’d not be so bad if I knew French, but since I don’t I end up with what sounds like Simlish when the song goes through the imaginary mp3 player in my head.

There is something funny about French girls flashing American gang signs, though.

Is there a name for that dance she does at the beginning where she holds her hands at her sides and swivels her hips? I suppose it’s supposed to be imitating the motions of hula-hooping.

MuxTape

It’s probably not perfectly legal, but there is a site called muxtape.com/ that allows you to upload MP3s and share them with your friends in a mixtape like fashion.

Here’s mine: http://drbooty.muxtape.com/.

Still a pretty cool idea, hopefully it won’t get taken down too soon, and of course by me posting about it and making it more well known I am contributing to its demise.

Someone should make a FaceBook plug-in for it.

Devo – Smart Patrol – That’s What He Said

18 Feb 2008 In: Music & Concerts

A long time ago Devo released a computer game called “The Adventures of the Smart Patrol”. The game wasn’t much more than a bunch of video clips with a little point and click adventure style gaming.

Actually the game was a little interesting in the regard that time would pass in the game and much of winning the game depended on being in the right place with the right items at the right time.

The main plot centered around a virus going around that turned people’s bones into jelly, leaving them helpless without pills and mechanical supports sold by pharmaceutical companies who were actually the ones behind the creating of the virus in the first place. The character must work with the Smart Patrol to stop the evil companies from turning people into enslaved, helpless blobs.

There was also a character named Red Rooster who had a gun that could infect people with the virus directly. He was somehow in cahoots with the pharma companies, not sure exactly how.

I’ve never actually played the game, I’ve only read reviews of it online and read wiki entries on it.

Still, I kinda like this song, even though the main characters in the video are not the actual Devo guys.

Today I am exceedingly happy. Yahoo! Music Unlimited finally added Velocity Girl to its list of artists.

For those of you who do not know of Velocity Girl, they were one of the first bands to be recognized as part of the “bubblegrunge” movement.

Lord of the Yum Yum

13 Jan 2008 In: Music & Concerts

I went to a trivia night in Richmonds Heights tonight. It was pretty fun, got to meet some interesting characters and such, but most importantly I got to see the amazing “Lord of the Yum Yum”:

http://www.lordoftheyumyum.com/

It’s hard to describe his act expect by words such as boisterous, energetic, and exuberant. His music was pure acapella, except he had a foot activated device that he uses to record sections of his singing and play them back in a loop, allowing himself to provide his own backup vocals and even harmonize with himself in real time.

Pretty neat stuff, and the guy was a total showman, class act all the way. One of his bits was a re-enactment of the heart-removal-human-sacrifice scene from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. He even pantomimed the removal of the heart, mimicking the sound of it beating as he flexed his fingers to show it was still beating.

Here are some of his tracks:

Bizet Carmen Overture.mp3

Habenera.mp3

But just hearing the music doesn’t do it justice, seeing his amazing energy and antics doubles its value. Here are some pictures I took:

Thinking back, I should of taking a video of it. Oh well. I hope I didn’t annoy him with me taking pictures constantly while he was performing; he’s kinda hard to photograph while he’s doing his act.

Code Monkey

1 Oct 2007 In: Music & Concerts

My father sent me a version of this wonderful bit of Machinima a while back, and I’ve been searching for a version on YouTube without the dumb faux talk show intro, but haven’t found a copy yet.

There are a lot of different Machinimas and amateur movies out there for the “Code Monkey” song, but I still think this one is the best.

Though the WoW one is definitely worth honorable mention:

One of my favorite Muppet Show bits from the days of old. This song has popped up in my head at least once a week since I was a child.
