Octomom Bust

1 May 2009 In: Art & Culture

octo

This is the work of artist Daniel Edwards and it borders on the Giger-esque with its creepy-yet-stately beauty.

I wonder if some future civilization will find this and believe was an homage to a fertility goddess, or if the Venus de Willendorf was meant as social slander and not an icon of worship.

Note: I had originally linked to another blog which originally posted this, but they decided to be uncouth and add some really garish and obtrusive watermarking to the image, so I made my own image and unlinked them.  Someone needs to learn some web-etiquette, me thinks.  There’s nothing wrong with hotlinking an image if someone links back to you and promotes your blog.  I was even about ready to add the blogger’s site to my list of sites but now they had to go and spoil everything.

NYC Garbage For Sale

28 Mar 2009 In: Art & Culture

NYC Garbage For Sale

This ranks up there with the person who discovered you could sell bottled water.  How about boxed garbage?

Well, to be fair, we’re not talking about any old garbage, but authentic NYC garbage, not some common garbage you could find here in St. Louis.

Hey, but who am I to judge?  I have to admit, I’m thinking about buying a cube of the stuff of my own… except it’ll set you back about 100 bucks to get some.  Well, in NYC dollars that’s not so much, so perhaps it’s a fair deal.

Really, I think I’ll just ask one of my NYC friends to box me up the contents of her garbage bin and just pay for shipping.

Read more about it here.

Hobotopia

I’ve lately been digging the comic genius of Adam Koford and his comic Hobotopia, which combines many of the most popular memes: lolcats, old-timey stuff, hobos, and geek culture references.

Keanu Reeves staring in Cowboy Bebop movie

16 Jan 2009 In: Art & Culture

I was very excited when I saw the words, “Cowboy Bebop Movie”… then I saw that it was staring Keanu Reeves… oy vey…

Keanu Saddles Up for Cowboy Bebop

Well, it could be worse. They could get Will Smith to play Jet Black. Why are Will Smith and Keanu Reeves the defacto leads for any sci-fi movie? ugh…

I can sort of see the resemblance, so maybe it will work out, but the lead actor pick drips of a marketing division who will rip any semblance of the original anime series to shreds.

Please, please do not do to Cowboy Bebop what was done to “I Robot”. Please, I’m begging you.

Is it cute? Creepy? An example of a bored and truculent ad agency?

Discuss.

Unusual Burlesque

3 Dec 2008 In: Art & Culture

WARNING: These videos contain boobies and sexually suggestive acts!

Burlesque is catching on like wildfire across the nation. It combines performance art, acrobatics, and some good ol’ dirty fun. Generally there isn’t any full nudity, but the goal is to entice and excite and use the power of suggestion to get the point across.

Burlesque dancers are always trying to find ways to make their act more interesting, and here are three examples of some unique acts:

Hula Hoop Burlesque

Balloon Burlesque

Samurai Girl

Okay…

SAMURAI GIRL, the TV series

I know I shouldn’t judge things I don’t understand, but I don’t understand this show, I haven’t even watched it, but I am going to judge it anyway.

Is this some sort of bizarre product of a bored marketing department or a bad case of groupthink?

The tag line for the show is, “Her Strength is her Destiny”.

What? Huh?

Squiggly Art

15 Jul 2008 In: Art & Culture

My old art teacher from highschool, Ron Isom, mentioned wanting to see some of my stream of consciousness art. I have tons of notebook paper covered with these repetition, pattern based drawings that where I draw what “smells right”.

I haven’t scanned any of them in yet, but here is one minor example of one that I did directly on the computer a while back:

The actual squiggle pieces are much larger and elaborate than this, but I often due sketch minor squiggle groupings like this when sitting with a pen and something to draw with.

I do have some paintings that aren’t quite squiggly line based in nature, but are indeed done with a sense of smell instead of a sense of artistic composition:

Also, there is this one which I think I may have posted before, but if not here it is again:

I have perhaps thought of getting back into art and perhaps even sharing an art show with a photographer friend of mine. Still, I’ve been neglecting my comics enough already. I have a new Strange Bedfellows drawn, but not inked, but I should get to that hopefully soon.

Four New Dune Novels

15 May 2008 In: Art & Culture

Many hardcore Dune fans have been a bit skeptical of the new novels written by Frank Herbert’s son Brian Herbert and some other guy named Kevin J Anderson… well, here come some more books to be approved or disapproved by humanity: “Paul of Dune”, “Jessica of Dune”, “Irulian of Dune”, and “Leto of Dune”.

These stories are meant to fill in the gaps between the different Dune novels and provide more back story and intrigue to already known people and events. The “Leto of Dune” novel is perhaps the most interesting. It covers the first years of rule by God Emperor Leto II.

You can read more at the Dune Blog.

I haven’t read the post-Herbert books yet and may never do so… still, I am curious about them.

And we all know how Gabe and Tycho of Penny Arcade felt about it: Warning: colorful language.

Actually, a correction: “Paul of Dune” is finished already and is coming out in September.

Indiana Jones and the Millenium Falcon

15 May 2008 In: Art & Culture

I recently heard that the new Indiana Jones movie involves aliens, which has lead me to a horrible thought: what if George Lucas is trying to link the Indiana Jones universe and the Star Wars universe together?

Lucas: “… and then Indiana Jones places the crystal skull into the temple wall, revealing a hanger full of abandoned tie-fighters…”

Writer: “Mr. Lucas, that’s a TERRIBLE idea.”

Lucas: “… you’re fired.”

Writer: “uhh… did I say terrible? I meant to say what a great idea! We could have it be that the gods of the Mayan civilization were actually ex-stormtroopers fleeing justice after the end of the Empire.”

Lucas: “YES!!! And Ewoks! Lots and lots of adorable little Ewoks wielding light sabers!”

Writer: “great… that will be… just great, Mr. Lucas… (sobs)”

The Office Overseas Crossover

18 Feb 2008 In: Art & Culture

I don’t watch either version of “The Office”, English or American, but I just thought of a funny episode they could do.

They could have it be that a consultant from their London office is coming over to help modernize their office. The consultant turns out to be played out by none other than Ricky Gervais who announces that to aid in the modernization of the office that “Hereby, all paper is BANNED from the office. No printers, no printed reports, no notepads nor sticky notes”.

The people in the office try their best to get by without paper, doing odd things like writing on their shirts or desks. Dwight acts like he’s on the paper patrol, searching people for “contraband”. Jim would probably rebel, doing things like throwing paper airplanes at Dwight and the Brittish consultant.

I think it’d be especially funny to see the two versions of the boss, Steve Carrell and Ricky Gervais, together and see how their characters would deal with each other.

Or has this been done already? I don’t watch the show…
