Steve Carrell is Maxwell Smart

4 Jun 2006 In: Art & Culture

Warner Bros. orginally wanted Will Ferrel to play the role of the bumbling secret agent, Maxwell Smart in the upcoming Hollywood remake of the TV series “Get Smart”, but due to a scheduling conflict his fellow “Anchorman” co-actor Steve Carrell, the “Daily Show” vet and star of the TV series “The Office”, will get the chance to walk in Max’s shoe-phones.

I think Steve will make a much better Maxwell Smart than Will Ferrel ever would. He even looks like Don Adams!

What I want to know is, who will play Agent 99? My vote is for Zooey Deschanel.

Bat-Woman Returns as a Lesbian

4 Jun 2006 In: Art & Culture

In the newly released comic 52, in which there is no Batman, Superman, nor Wonder Woman, minor heroes into a new light. One minor hero, Bat-Woman, is being brought back as a lesbian, after being killed in 1979.

Is this the first lesbian superhero? There have been lesbian villians in past graphic novels, and there were some rumors about Super-Girl and Bat-Girl (who is not the same as Bat-Woman), but as far as I know this is the first lesbian super hero… at least in the DC/Marvel universes.

Law & Order SVU on SciFi

3 May 2006 In: Art & Culture

Okay, I guess the term Science Fiction can cover a lot of ground, and I like the Law & Order TV franchise, but I don’t really think Law & Order SVU really fits on Sci-Fi’s lineup.

Are murder mysteries sci-fi? They often do involve science, but they do not have the properties that I consider proper sci-fi, like imagining things that do not exist in the real world. The Law & Order world is meant to be as real as possible, often stealing storylines directly from newspaper headlines. No super-science, no futurism, no dragons or magic, no aliens or dimesional wormholes… but is it sci-fi?

New Star Trek Movie

21 Apr 2006 In: Art & Culture

Just when you thought the Star Trek franchise had up and died, here comes a new movie boldly going where no trek movie has gone before:

Paramount Pictures announced today that Lost creator J.J. Abrams will co-write, produce and direct the eleventh Star Trek film, set for release in 2008.

from trektoday.com

This new movie will document Kirk and Spock’s first meeting and growing friendship at Star Fleet Academy.

Who is this JJ Abrams they mention is responsible for this new addition to the Trek timeline?

[JJ Abrams] created and produced various television and movie projects such as Alias, Felicity and Armageddon, and co-created Lost. He also co-wrote and directed Mission: Impossible III, which is set for release on May 5, 2006.

from WikiPedia

I like Lost, those episodes I’ve seen of it, but I really did not like Armageddon, though I know a lot of people did. I still think Joss Whedon, the main man behind Firefly, would do a better job at making a Trek film.

Walmart 2.0

28 Mar 2006 In: Art & Culture

Walmart, not content with only destroying all mom and pop thrift and hardware stores, have now set their eyes on crushing all mom and pop sushi and wine stores… and Best Buy while they’re at it.

A new Walmart opened in Texas that includes expensive wines, high-end electronics, a capucino bar and fresh sushi made for you while you wait.

Walmart, who has yearly end profits in the billions, has decided to use their profits not to pay for worker health plans but to instead try to bring in all the blue-state metrosexuals to shop at Walmart along side their red-state breeder contemporaries.

Still… if it is good sushi and coffee I might be tempted to come in a bit more often.

Futurama Renewed!

27 Mar 2006 In: Art & Culture

I thought it was just a rumor, so I didn’t bother reporting on it earlier, but it appears Futurama is indeed being renewed!

This makes Futurama the second cartoon saved from oblivion by Adult Swim, Cartoon Network’s late night incarnation, the previous being the crude yet quite clever Family Guy.

Chef Leaves South Park

14 Mar 2006 In: Art & Culture

I’ve been a bit of a fan of South Park for a while now, not because of the scatalogical humour and ribald humor, but because of their biting social commentary. No one is safe from Stone and Parker’s animated stabs at every public figure or belief, whether they be liberal or conservative. This includes all religions, even those religions held by members of the South Park production and acting team.

Isaac Hayes, who wrote the theme to Shaft and was inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, does the voice of “Chef”, an elementary school cook who helps teach the main characters of South Park about the facts of life. The Chef character borrows much from blaxploitation films and often breaks into song about making epic love to women while sporting a chef’s hat 24/7.

Issac Hayes has lended his deep, powerful voice to aid the creators of South Park in spoofing Christianity, Judaism, Budism and many other religions… but in a recent episode where Scientology got the South Park treatment, a religion Isaac Hayes is a devout believer in, the Chef character was no where to be found, and now Isaac Hayes has announced that he is forever leaving South Park, effectively killing off Chef.

Does this mean that Trey Parker and Matt Stone are going to be labeled as Suppressive Persons?

Batman & Rumsfeld?

16 Feb 2006 In: Art & Culture

Who is the new villian Batman has to save Gotham from? A clone of Dr. Freeze? A toy maker gone mad?

No. The newest scourge of Gotham City is none other than Osama Bin Ladin!

In upcoming issues of the DC comin Batman the Caped Crusader will defend American soil from terrorists from the Middle East, which makes a little sense considering that Batman likes to hide and plot in caves too.

I’m in Love with Maria Bamford

28 Jan 2006 In: Art & Culture

When I was younger I had a rather unhealthy obsession with Bjork, the Icelandic singing sensation well known for being completely bonkers. I eventually grew out of that, though I still put her second album “Post” on play to feel a bit of giddy nostalgia now and then.

My latest fascination is with Commedians of Comedy group member Maria Bamford. She usually talks in a squeaky, little girl gone insane voice that may or may not be her real voice (much like Bjork). She does a lot of different voices and many of them sound a bit more “normal” than the way she usually speaks.

Her humor ranges from talking about her problems with relationships, how much she hates work and her day job, politics, religion, the weirdness of her family, and a lot of random silliness (like her rendition of Old McDonald’s Farm which includes Pterodactyls).

I would post some of her comedy here, but I try not to pirate whenever possible. You can hear her through MusicMatch and iTunes, or just buy her album.

Merry What?

19 Dec 2005 In: Art & Culture

There is much grumbling as of late about some evil liberals threatening to take the Christ out of Christmas, most notable of late being Bill O’Riley. I want to thank the Boondocks for recently reminding everyone that Christmas originally had very little to do with the birth of Christ or much less christiantity.

Christmas was invented in the fourth century to replace the Roman Saturnalia, a holiday season that celebrated the god Saturn: the god of sowing and blight. The original holiday had much more akin with Mardi Gras than the holiday we know of today.

So, Mr. O’Reily, if you really want an “authentic, old time Christmas” I suggest you drop the “Merry Christmas” for “Io, Saturnalia!”.

Mayan Sistine Chapel

14 Dec 2005 In: Art & Culture

A new find in San Bartolo, Guatemala has many acheologists and ancient art buffs drooling. They are refering to it as the “Sistine Chapel” of the Mayan civilization, showing artistry and brushwork never before seen in their civilization or any other in the area.

The Mayan glyphs are mostly known, but these murals feature glyphs never before seen, as this work is centuries older than any other Mayan works found to date.

Local Artist in the ‘Lou

15 Jul 2005 In: Art & Culture

While eating the wonderful brunch buffet at Cummel’s Cafe, located on the corner of 16th and Washington… I think, I got to meet a local artist named Wayne who was doing the dishes.

He showed me one of his works:

Appearantly he is also wokring on a mural in the Mangia Italiano on 3145 S Grand. I want to try that place out so when I do I’ll take a picture of it and post it here.

Girls Gone Gothic

13 Jul 2005 In: Art & Culture

The New York Times has had a recent series of Multimedia slide shows titled, “The Tribes of New York”. It covers a wide variety of people and atyles, including the Ushers, members of the Abyssinian Babtist Church who guide people along the aisle to meet G_d and all wear the same white uniform.

The most recent “tribe” being covered are the Goth Girls of New York. Not precisely an institution, but more over general fashion sense and sensibility that a certain percentage of the Big Apple’s population seem to share.

I wonder if there are certain groups of people in St. Louis that could be referred to as tribes? The Spock Rockers? The Crack-Head Moochers? The Business Poseurs?

One L or Two?

The Lama

The one-l lama,
He’s a priest.
The two-l llama,
He’s a beast.
And I will bet
A silk pajama
There isn’t any
Three-l lllama.

– Ogden Nash

I went for a stroll around in Downtown West and I decided to stop by the Washington Post, a local coffee and parcel shipping joint on the 1300 block of Washington, and I was surprised with a small little ceremony being prepared right on the sidewalk:
