It wasn't free, but it was the only thing we drank.

The Monads are my favorite local act (to fully disclose, they aren't the only act to hold that title!), which of course makes them a strong contender for favorite act, period.

Several months ago during the "Undercover Weekend" series, where local acts channeled an act from a given decade (well, okay, the only options were the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 1990s), the Monads did Devo. Like many of the acts that participated (were chosen to participate, I should clarify), just one night of channeling their chosen act was not enough, so they've revived it here and there (notably, on this most recent New Years Eve). By no means to the extent that they should have received a reputation as exclusively a Devo cover band, given how many shows they play as their normal selves, but I guess ya never know with people! Anyway, if you wanna experience that, which I do recommend, they posted a few YouTubers on their blarg at http://www.themonads.com/2009/01/08/new-years-eve-as-devo/

Free bourbon? The mint juleps were definitely not free, but were most excellent. I wish the sun had been out longer but at least it didn't rain on us.

Someone had told me before that the Monads were a DEVO cover band. When they walked up with the violins and contrabass I was expecting an acoustic version of "Mongoloid" or "Beautiful World".

They didn't play any DEVO, but they did totally rock.

Yeah we went to that Off Broadway show later, on par with the Monads were the Woodbox Gang of southern Illinois (Carbondale area) who headlined and played for like 90 minutes or something. Bourbon for everyone. No mint juleps, though.
