I saw it in a drawing class in highschool. The teacher, Ron Isom, was a bit of a crazy guy and was trying to show us things to loosen our creative style. He also showed us “Brazil” and several other awesome movies.
My whole artistic direction changed after watching this documentary. If I get back into art I might try to start a neo-Dadaist movement, perhaps having an art show intermixed with absurdest theater skits and dodecaphonic music.
Ah, my apologies Mr. Isom, but I of course use the term “bit of a crazy guy” as a compliment as I believe that intelligence and insanity are closely linked.
I am posting the link to your blog for those too lazy to Google it:
Glad to see you’re doing still doing art and such after your retirement… or are you still teaching at Belleville East? I had heard you retired.
I noticed on your blog you write about automatic drawing and stream of consciousness. I too have had experiences with automatic writing and such. I even wrote some short stories in a stream of consciousness style, some of which I turned in as term papers during my time at Knox College. I found one of them posted on the web somewhere and grabbed it and posted it here:
[:B:]WARNING – story contains extreme language and references to incest (Rated R)[/:B:]
The incest themes in the story are not meant to be pornographic, or even taken literally. The characters in the story represent existential archetypes and gods, both of which tend to be a bit incestuous by their nature. Nation and Kentara represent different parts of the psyche, and the people represent memes or perhaps individual brain cells… was never quite sure which it was.
Still… it’s a bizarre read and not for everyone.
I wish I had some of my artwork from my Knox times still around. The only ones I have saved are not my best. The best ones got sold or were lost. I still do these weird line drawings sometimes that are a bit like your “Automatic Drawing”. Perhaps I’ll find some of them and post them. [:duck:][:coffee:]
Thanks for the link. Sorry about the typo in my comment – just a senior moment. I will be 69 years old this September. I retired in 1994. I don’t know if retirement is the right term because I never had a job. I just stopped going to that place were all the weird kids gathered.
Thanks for sharing your story – I did not take the theme literally.
